Every year there are new Search Engine Optimization (SEO) tips that websites should follow. The tactics that worked 5 years ago are not for the most part the ones that work today.
Google is constantly adjusting its algorithm to make search better and smarter. If you want your content to be found by as many people as possible it’s important that you adjust your SEO focus accordingly.
Here are 5 SEO trends we think we will be the most important in 2019:
1. Long Tail Keywords
This is not exactly a new one and was important this year too, but I definitely think it will be even more important next year.
Long tail keywords usually contain anywhere between 3-10 words and really help to richly describe what your content is about. Long tail keywords are how most people use Google anyway so it makes sense to pay attention to them in your content.
Long tail keywords are associated with high intent and usually have the highest probability of converting.
2. Longer Content
Longer, richer content became all the rage in 2018 and don’t expect that to change in the coming year. Content with 1,500 words or more have been performing much better in search ranking and gaining more organic content than short posts.
The key to being successful with longer content is to make sure it’s not fluff or filler. It needs to be real high quality long form content that provides value to your readers. Google’s algorithm is smart enough now to know what’s quality content and what’s nonsense.
3. Page Speed
This has been a big one for the last couple of years and will only continue to be even more important in the coming years. You don’t have to be a research scientist to know our attention spans get shorter and shorter by the year. When someone clicks a link it had better come up in a couple of seconds or most people will just move on.
There are too many sources available to find what someone is looking for to make it worth waiting around for your particular content to load.
4. Voice Search
With the rise of in-home devices like Amazon’s Alexa and Facebook’s recently launched Portal device, voice search is going to be huge in 2019. Some are predicting as much as 50% of all searches will be done through voice by 2020. So you may as well start planning ahead now.
5. Local SEO
Local SEO is huge now and will be even bigger in next year. Most searches are now conducted using a mobile device and you want your local business to come up first.
According to Optimize Marketing, 18% of local smartphone searches led to a purchase within one day!
The best way to improve your local SEO is to make sure your website is optimized for mobile the best you can. Your site needs to perform just as good a mobile device as it does on a desktop.
Also, be sure to optimize your Google My Business page and try to get as many 5-star reviews as possible.
There will be many changes to SEO coming in 2019 and beyond. Some we can predict and some we can’t. All you can do is study the current trends and do the best you can planning for the future.
The worst thing you can do is do nothing.
